An Insider’s Guide to Marske-by-the-Sea

Friday 10th March, 2023 by hs-admin

If you’re looking for a coastal getaway, look no further than Marske-by-the-Sea. Nestled on the coast between Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea, this lovely village is perfectly located to explore everything North Yorkshire has to offer. The ideal place for family holidays, romantic retreats, stays with friends and solo adventures, Marske-by-the-Sea will certainly charm you.

The Beach

Perfect for a crisp morning walk in the colder months and a fun-filled day for the family in the summer, Marske Sands is a little haven on the North Yorkshire coast. It is a gently sloping beach which is often quieter than the beaches in the nearby towns of Redcar and Saltburn. Even better – it’s dog friendly so pups can enjoy a run on the golden sands without any restrictions! Marske Sands is popular for water spots in the summer months so if you’re into surfing and windsurfing, it’s the ideal spot.

The Food

When it comes to eating in Marske-by-the-Sea, there are a number of eateries within the village to choose from. First up is the amazing Craigs By The Sea. This family owned cafe serves incredible homemade breads, bakes and patisserie. Open daily for breakfast and lunch, their baked eggs and skillet breakfast are not to be missed. If you’re looking for a sweet treat, we’d recommend treating yourself to one of their home bakes!

Another fantastic place to eat is Rose & Potter. This cosy, little spot is a popular wine bar and deli serving sharing boards. We’d recommend The Mixed Platter which has a little bit everything including cured and smoked artisan meats as well as cheeses with a wide range of accompaniments.

If you’re looking for pizza, look no further than Base Pizzeria & Bar. This brand new restaurant serves up incredible wood fired, Neapolitan pizzas. Their classic Neapolitan Margherita is always a winner or you can create your own with up to four toppings.

The Bars

Marske-by-the-Sea has a number of bars to choose from. If you’re travelling with your four legged friend, The Dog House is a dog friendly bar which serves coffee during the day and speciality gins and wines by night! A really nice atmosphere, this cosy spot is perfect for a tipple on an evening. There’s often live music at weekends too!

We’d also recommend a visit to The Lockdown on the High Street. This 1920s art deco inspired micro-bar serves up delicious cocktails. We’d recommend their Summer Passion which is served in a teapot or a fruity Pineapple Crush. They also do 2 for £10 on certain cocktails from Sunday – Thursday all day.

The Smugglers Den is another little gem in Marske-by-the-Sea. With separate rooms and log burners, this stylish micro-bar is cosy and warm. They offer a fantastic range of real ales, lagers, beers and ciders as well as spirits. It is also dog friendly so you’ll often see dogs laid by the fire. In the summer months, you can enjoy a drink in the yard area at the back of the bar with the sun shining above.

The Pubs

If you’re looking for a traditional pub, Marske-by-the-Sea has a few to choose from! Pop to The Ship Inn where you can enjoy a quiet pint or hearty pub food. This characterful, dog friendly inn often has live music and flat screen TVs showing live sport. There is also a small beer garden at the front of the pub where you can enjoy your food and drinks alfresco style.

You can also head to The Zetland (known as the ‘Top House’ to the locals). This friendly and welcoming pub offers a place to enjoy a drink or bite to eat. There is BT Sport, Sky Sports, free Wi-Fi, a dart board, pool table and jukebox. In the summer months, you can relax in the hidden beer garden.

The Shops

If you’re planning a BBQ or a Full English breakfast during your stay in Marske-by-the-Sea, we’d recommend visiting Marske Butchers. There is also a local fruit and veg shop on The Wynd where you can buy essential groceries and plants. If you need to do a bigger shop, there is also a Sainsbury’s Local in the village square and a Co-op Food on the High Street. You’ll also find a post office and Coopers Chemist on the High Street too. For spoilt pups, there is a pet shop on The Wynd called Nibblers Pet Store where you can buy pet food, treats and toys.

When it comes to pampering, there are a number of hairdressers and nail salons in Marske-by-the-Sea. If you’re looking for a new hairdo, head to Nancy Darcy Hairdressing or John Paul Hairdressers. For fresh nails, we’d recommend visiting Polished or Grace Suggett Beauty Therapist who is based in Skinderella.

The Walks

If you’re looking for a leisurely walk, you can’t beat a stroll on Marske Sands or the beautiful Marske Valley Gardens. For keen walkers, there are a number of fantastic walks nearby with spectacular views. Join the England Coast Path from Marske through to Saltburn-by-the-Sea where you take a clifftop path until you reach Saltburn beach.

If you want to try something more challenging, you can join the Cleveland Way Trail from nearby Saltburn to Sandsend which is a tough 17.5 mile trail through the National Park and Heritage Coast with the most stunning views. Another local favourite is to climb Roseberry Topping (which is a short 20-minute drive from Marske-by-the-Sea). This 3 mile climb will offer views across the North York Moors National Park once you reach the top.
